Banana for Scale
Support
Help with measuring in bananas. One BS-1 standard banana is exactly 18 cm. If your question isn't answered here, email support@buildingandexploring.com.
Getting started
- Measure: aim the centre reticle at one end of the thing you're measuring and tap Set Start, then aim at the other end and tap Set End. You'll see the distance in bananas and metres.
- Compare: switch to Compare, fit the object inside the frame and tap Place Banana. A true-size 18 cm banana appears beside it, ready for a photo.
- Tap Capture Photo to save the result to Photos, then Share if you want to send it.
The app can't find a surface
- Move your iPhone slowly from side to side for a few seconds so it can map the scene.
- Use good, even light. Dim rooms and strong glare both make tracking harder.
- Aim at textured surfaces such as wood, carpet, fabric or a patterned table. Plain white walls, glass, mirrors and shiny surfaces are hard to detect.
- Step back if the app asks you to. Very close subjects are difficult to place a banana beside.
- If tracking stays stuck, close the app fully and reopen it.
Camera and Photos permissions
Banana for Scale needs camera access to work. If you declined it, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and turn on Banana for Scale.
Saving captures needs permission to add photos. If saving fails, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos > Banana for Scale and choose Add Photos Only. You can still use Share without it.
How accurate is it?
Banana for Scale uses Apple's ARKit, the same technology behind many measuring apps. Results are a good everyday estimate rather than an exact measurement. Accuracy depends on light, surface texture, distance and how steadily you hold the phone. iPhones with LiDAR tend to do better.
It is not a calibrated instrument, so please don't use it for construction, medical, legal or safety decisions. For anything that matters, use a tape measure.
Which devices are supported?
An iPhone that supports ARKit, running iOS 17 or later. The app runs in portrait and works without an internet connection.
Privacy
The app collects no data. See the privacy policy for details.
